Are Dental X-Rays Harmful?

Dental X-rays are very low-dose imaging tests that help dentists find problems that are not visible during a routine examination, such as decay between teeth, infections, bone loss, and problems under fillings or crowns. 1 12 15 The American Dental Association says X-rays should be taken only when clinically justified, meaning when the expected diagnostic benefit outweighs the small radiation risk. 1 15
