Flap Surgery
Specialized gum surgery to restore oral health in advanced cases.

What Is Flap Surgery for Gums?
Flap surgery involves creating small incisions in the gum tissue to gently lift it away from the tooth roots. This gives our periodontists clear access to remove stubborn bacterial deposits and diseased tissue, followed by reshaping and smoothing of the bone. Once cleansed, the gums are sutured back into place to reduce pocket depth and encourage firm reattachment.

Benefits of Flap Surgery
- Effective for Advanced Disease: Targets areas beyond the reach of scaling and root planing, delivering thorough decontamination.
- Reduced Pocket Depth: Shallower pockets make daily oral hygiene far more manageable, lowering the chance of infection recurrence.
- Bone Preservation: Stabilises and protects the underlying bone, curbing further degeneration and supporting long‑term tooth retention.

Who Should Consider Flap Surgery?
- Have advanced periodontitis with deep, persistent pockets
- Show significant gum recession or bone loss despite non‑surgical therapy
- Wish to halt further gum and bone deterioration to secure the future of your teeth

Long‑Term Care & Maintenance
Post‑operative care is crucial. You will be provided with detailed oral‑hygiene instructions, including gentle brushing techniques and antimicrobial rinses. Regular periodontal reviews help ensure optimal healing, especially for smokers or patients with systemic health considerations.
What risks are associated with flap surgery?
Complications are rare but can include mild bleeding, swelling, or infection. We take all precautions—sterile techniques and post‑op instructions—to minimise any risks.
Will I need stitches, and when are they removed?
Yes—dissolvable or non‑dissolvable sutures are used to secure the gum tissue. Non‑dissolvable stitches are typically removed after seven to ten days.
When can I resume normal brushing and flossing?
You may gently brush adjacent teeth the next day, but direct brushing of the surgical site should wait until your periodontist advises—usually after one to two weeks.
Is flap surgery suitable for smokers?
Smoking impairs healing. While we can perform the procedure, we strongly recommend cessation beforehand and during recovery to improve outcomes.
Will I require antibiotics or additional medications?
Depending on your individual health and the procedure’s extent, we may prescribe a short course of antibiotics and recommend an antiseptic mouthwash to support healing.
