Bone Graft Procedure

Reconstruct jawbone to support implants and improve oral structure.

What Is a Dental Bone Graft?

A bone graft entails placing graft material—either autogenous (from your own body), allograft (donor), or synthetic—into areas of diminished bone density. A biocompatible membrane is then positioned over the graft to protect it and guide new bone growth. This process restores sufficient bone volume to support implants and maintain facial contours.

Benefits of Bone Grafting

  • Implant Foundation: Establishes robust support for dental implants, guaranteeing their long‑term success.
  • Jaw Preservation: Prevents further bone resorption, preserving your natural facial profile.
  • Enhanced Oral Function: Restored bone structure improves gum health and facilitates effective chewing and speech.

Who Needs Bone Grafting?

Bone grafting is advisable for patients who:
  • Lack adequate jawbone density for implant placement
  • Have experienced bone loss from periodontal disease, trauma or prolonged tooth absence
  • Seek to rebuild facial support and prevent future bone deterioration
Your smile journey begins with a thorough assessment to determine the ideal grafting approach for your unique anatomy.

Still have a question?

Grafts can be autogenous (your own bone), allograft (donor bone), xenograft (animal‑derived) or synthetic. Your clinician will recommend the most suitable option for your needs.

A biocompatible membrane is trimmed to fit and stabilised with tiny sutures or bio‑adhesive. This barrier protects the graft and guides new bone growth.

In some cases, immediate implant placement is possible. Often, however, a healing period of three to six months is required to ensure the graft integrates fully.

Mild swelling and tenderness are normal. Apply a cold pack externally for short intervals, take prescribed or over‑the‑counter pain relief, and rest with your head elevated.

Conditions such as diabetes or osteoporosis, and habits like smoking, can influence healing. We’ll review your medical history and may coordinate care with your GP to optimise outcomes.
